“With most sports, you can either play for fun or play to win. With tournament poker, there’s only one way to play. If you’ve ever questioned your potential for aggressiveness or your lust for victory, join the nearest poker league and pull up a chair. You might not recognize yourself.

Like chess, poker is a game of strategy, so winning comes down to one thing: how good you are. You can learn to play online and continue to hone your skills there, competing against virtual cigar chompers. (Poker is still largely considered to be a man’s game.) Or you can move outside your comfort zone and play against real people who will judge you, scrutinize your every move, and try to psych you out. Can you take it? Many women can, and more are joining their ranks all the time.

Poker is the hottest sport to sweep the country since NASCAR. Fifty-four thousand people competed in the 2007 World Series of Poker, which paid out a total of $160 million—including $8 million to the first-prize winner. But the two sports are very different. Racing is for fans; poker is for players. Racing blows your eardrums; poker strains your brain. Racing is about other people’s nerves of steel; poker is about yours.
